I practically beg, but in the end they just don't care enough to even go back and correct their mistakes. I know they were taught the skills because my own children in first and second grades are being taught the exact same skills. I feel (daily) your frustrations. Maybe this problem is way too "Common." :)Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09590688165504742008noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7041296459451172307.post-9662041641555378592013-10-09T18:41:56.630-07:002013-10-09T18:41:56.630-07:00I feel the same way about manners and courtesy - t...I feel the same way about manners and courtesy - they seem to be a lost art! My mother would have knocked me into next week if I acted the way so many people do now. It blows my mind what has become commonplace. Hello - pajamas in the store? Where has self-respect gone? I would love to know how they have changed and whether the issues that plagued them as freshmen in high school still plague them in college.
You're right - it's so much more than technology. I was contemplating how far to go with the issues I see, but it easily could have turned into a whole book! :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16766084748067597509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7041296459451172307.post-87026099433084799832013-10-09T18:33:54.908-07:002013-10-09T18:33:54.908-07:00Jennie,

Several times recently, I have found myself in waiting rooms or lines for long periods. As I waited, I observed adult behavior and overheard conversations which left me wondering, what happened to good manners, courtesy and consideration of others. After a long wait in a surgery waiting area, I wanted to stand in the middle of the room and order the people to get quiet! In hearing some of the conversations in those situations and reading posts on FB, I feel dismayed that in our society we do have much and we have a lot of options about how to spend our time. However, in general, today, we don't put enough emphasis on academics. Many don't take full advantage of the free public education available to every person in this country. Without the basic foundation of knowledge you mentioned, people can not possibly make decisions that are for their own best interest and that of their families. Thank you for caring so deeply and for sharing your thoughts so effectively.
Sallie Phttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12882689874729273746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7041296459451172307.post-27121859298731042162013-10-09T17:38:57.662-07:002013-10-09T17:38:57.662-07:00I teach those students 4 years later, and I have t...I teach those students 4 years later, and I have the same questions. My heart feels the sincerity of your words, because I know that sincere concern all too well myself. Yes, I wholeheartedly believe we are on the right side of the U curve. I also believe it's much more than technology, but I better not get on any soap boxes here. I'll just say the most successful education system in the world is in Finland. We'd do well to study their culture.

And, no, you're not making too big a leap! If they don't know where Germany is, they can't possibly understand the implications of the Holocaust on the post-WWII world.

PS I love Malcolm Gladwell and need to add this one to my reading list!Meredithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09137214178447010232noreply@blogger.com
